This Saturday, the Naked Creek and 50k Training Programs are running south on the Appalachian Trail from Rockfish Gap. This is predominantly an out and back route, and so there will be several length options for this run.
Those training for Naked Creek should aim for 10-12 miles. There is more vert in this run than the other runs, and so if this is your first time in the mountains, aim for closer to 10. Those training for a 50k should aim for 16 miles.
Where: 5162 Howardsville Turnpike, Afton, VA 22920 (the parking lot of the abandoned Howard Johnson Hotel next to the King’s Gourmet Popcorn Stand)
When: Saturday (2/17/2024) at 7:30 AM
Who: Amanda Blondeau and Stuart Brown will be your hosts for this run! Everyone is welcome!
What:
10 miles - Follow the AT south to the AT Shelter (at the creek), then turn around. This is a great option for your first time on this section and with a good amount of vert.
12 miles - Follow the AT south to the Jack Albright Loop, then turn around.
13.5 miles - Follow the AT south to the Jack Albright Loop, then follow the Loop clockwise (to the left) to the Glass Hollow Overlook trail, after checking out the view, return the way you came (i.e., don’t follow the loop all the way around).
16 miles - Follow the AT south to the Jack Albright Loop, then follow the Loop around, before returning on the AT. This route also includes the Glass Hollow Overlook.
Weather Reminder:
Plan for the cold.
Bring a water carrier that you could take on the run with you (strongly advise carrying some form of hydration/food on the run with you as this is not a short one).
Bring layers, a warm hat, and gloves. Prepare for some possible rain.
Bring dry clothes to change into at the end of the run.
We’re stoked to have some good weather this weekend, and look forward to seeing you out there!
